Whitletts win 4-2 on penalties Whitletts Victoria won their first penalty shoot out for 27 years as they knocked Superleague cracks Petershill out of the West of Scotland Cup at Petershill Park.
In only the second ever competitive meeting between the clubs, both sides served up an entertaining 90 minutes the sides remained tied at 0-0 but in the penalty shoot out Steven Douglas saved the first Petershill penalty as Issac Kerr, Graeme Barbour, Marty Lawrie and Sean Ewart all converted from 12 yards as Vics ran out 4-2 winners on penalties.
It was Vics first penalty shoot win since they defeated Annbank 5-3 in the final of the Kyle & Carrick Cup back in April 1990.
During the match both sides had chances to win the match and it was the undefeated Superleague First Division leaders who were first to threaten as Jason Hardie was released through on goal but Stevie Douglas was quickly off his line to deny the Peasie striker.
Vics response was swift as Graeme Barbour couldn’t get enough on a Jordan Boyd cross to direct it goalward in front of goal. Both sides continued to press but defences were well on top but ten minutes before the break new signing Craig Fisher brought a fine save out of Petershill keeper Dean Trainor who tipped the midfielders’ effort over the crossbar.
Right on the half time whistle it was the Vics goal that survived a scare as Hardie cut inside two defenders and seemed set to score but his close range effort was blocked and cleared by Sean Ewart.
Ten minutes into the second period Douglas pulled off an outstanding save to deny Hardie and moments later Chris Hall should have done better for the home side as he found the space inside the box to get away a shot on more than one occasion but elected to try and beat the entire Vics defence before being crowded out by Ewart.
Petershill had the better of the exchanges in the second period but rarely troubled a well marshalled Vics defence as the visitors continue to pose a threat on the counter attack. In one such attack Vics won a free kick 25 yards out from goal and Mbanje Munyaradzi brought the best out of Trainor as he pushed the ball round the post.
In the dying moments of the game Douglas saved a Liam Finnigan header on the line and Hall curled his shot over the bar.
In the penalty shoot out Douglas was the Vics’ hero as he dived full stretch to his left to save Finnigan’s spot kick, while Peasie sub Gary Hynes put his spot kick wide of the goal to give Vics a strong advantage and although Chris Wilson and Hall both scored for the home side, four well taken spot kicks from Issac Kerr, Barbour, Lawrie and Ewart won the day for Vics to end their baron run in penalty shoot outs.

Footnote: The only other previous competitive meeting between the Clubs came in the semi final of the Scottish Junior Cup in 1956 . Petershill won that encounter 3-2 in front of 20,100 spectators at Shawfield Stadium before going on to beat Lugar 4-3 in the final at Hampden Park.
Whitletts Victoria’s win over Petershill was their first victory in a penalty shoot out for a staggering 27 years. Not since a 5-3 shoot out win over Annbank United in the final of the now defunct Kyle & Carrick Cup on 18th April 1990 has any Vics team won a penalty shoot. And it’s not been for the lack of trying. During that time Vics have lost a staggering FIFTEEN successive penalty shoots.
