MATCH REPORT : SALTCOATS VICTORIA 3 WHITLETTS VICTORIA 3

The Vics’ shared the goals and the spoils in this six goal thriller at Campbell Park but for Whitletts this result will be a blow to their promotion aspirations this season.

In a game that swung one way then the next the Dam Park side had the better of the chances but failed to take the opportunities to kill off their opponents and in the end will be thankful to come away with a point.

With only a couple of minutes on the clock Whitletts almost took the lead when George Wallace headed a Ricky Hanvey corner just over the bar. Whitletts were having the better of the opening period but couldn’t create that clear cut opportunity although Alan Love went close with a drive from 25 yards.

Just past the half hour mark Love sent Michael O’Connor clean through on goal and as Saltocats keeper James Catterson raced from his line, O’Connor prodded the ball past him but there wasn’t enough purchase on the ball and a defender got back to clear the danger.

At this point Whitletts keeper Ally McInnes hadn’t been involved in the game but he had to pick the ball out the net in the 34th minute. It’s one the Vics stopper will want to forget as he tried to let a long ball forward run into his penalty area only to be chased down by the physical presence of Chris Black who rolled the ball into the empty net.

Within three minutes however the Ayr side were level. A ball played into the box found O’Connor who fizzed the ball across goal where Tony Balfour was on hand to drill the ball into the net.

All square at the interval it was McInnes who was the first keeper called into action after the restart when he parried a Sean Quinn free kick while for Whitletts, Wallace just failed to connect in front of goal with a Lee Holland header from an O’Connor free kick.

It was clear there were more goals in this game and in the 57th minute it was Whitletts who took the lead. Balfour was fouled inside the penalty area and although Whitletts haven’t had their troubles to seek from the spot this season, this time there was no mistake as Balfour fired past Catterson.

Whitletts were on top at this point and a number of half chances went a begging but it was not all one way traffic and Saltcoats sub Kyle Russell looked set to score but got the ball stuck under his feet allowing McInnes to save.

In the 69th minute Balfour beat Catterson to a through ball but was forced wide and from the strikers cross Hanvey’s netbound header was cleared off the line.

But against the run of play, it was Saltcoats who drew level in the 73rd minute. As the Whitletts defence failed to properly clear a free kick into the box a shot from Adam Easdon was blocked but fell kindly to the unmarked Jamie Moan who reacted to fire past McInnes.

Whitletts responded and Hanvey’s free kick was saved by Catterson at the second attempt but with five minutes remaining a poor pass from Martin Lawrie released Russell but McInnes reacted quickly to save. But that was a warning the visitors failed to heed and sixty seconds later former Whitletts midfielder James Davidson undid his former team mates with a spectacular header. In a neat move there appeared no danger as Liam Curran crossed but Davidson’s header from the edge of the area flew past McInnes into the top corner.

But the Dam Park side responded immediately. From a Balfour corner on the left, Catterson failed to hold O’Connor’s volley as the ball squirmed from his grasp and crossed the line for the equaliser, despite protests from the home players. Referee Calum Scott however was well placed to see the ball had clearly crossed the line to secure a point for the visitors.

Not the result Whitletts were looking for going into this week’s match at league leaders Darvel as they look to end a run of five matches without a win.
