Whitletts Vics News

Whitletts Victoria start their preparations for the new season with a friendly against Scottish Junior Cup kingpins Hurlford United this coming Saturday (19th July).

The match at Blair Park, Hurlford kicks off at 2pm whilst the following Wednesday evening (23rd), the Ayr side travel to Irvine to play Ayrshire Amateur Cup winners Clark Drive at Irvine Sports Club grounds.

Whitletts Victoria have begun to strengthen their squad for the new campaign with a triple swoop on Ayrshire District League rivals Lugar.

The Dam Park side have signed goalkeeper Ally McInnes, defender Martin Reynolds and midfielder James Cuthbertson from the Rosebank Park outfit as manager Steph McMillan moved to bolster his squad for the Ayr clubs’ bid to win promotion to the Superleague.

McMillan believes that the trio will be key figures in the Clubs’ promotion drive this term.

“Ally is a quality goalkeeper. He is very agile with a good pair of hands on him and can organise his defence very well. He was outstanding in three matches against us last season and with Jordan Callaghan already at the Club we’ll have genuine competition for the keepers jersey.”

“Martin Reynolds is a player I’ve rated for a long time. He’s only 23 but has a wealth of experience. He was a triple Player of the Year when he was with Kilwinning but because he plays as a sweeper he didn’t fit into their system when George Grierson was the manager. We play with a sweeper and have been looking for someone to fill that role since Del McCulloch left the Club and Martin fits the bill.”

“James Cuthbertson is a player I know very well and almost brought him to the Club last year. He is a strong physical player in midfield who breaks up opposition play very well and chips in with more than his fair share of goals from midfield and will be a major asset for us.”

And manager McMillan also said that he is looking to add to his squad in the weeks ahead.

“I thought that defensively and upfront last season we were very strong but we failed to get a strong settled midfield and I think that ultimately cost us so that is an area that I’ll be looking to strengthen as well as adding a wee bit of competition both upfront and at the back just to keep everyone on their toes.”
