Whitletts Victoria sign Michael O'Connor

Whitletts Victoria have continued their rebuilding ahead of the new season by signing striker Michael O’Connor from South Ayrshire rivals Troon on a two year deal.

The former Annbank and Girvan hitman becomes the third signing by manager Steph McMillan in the summer following on from the signings of Tony Balfour and Raymond Buchanan.
O’Connor played a vital role in the Portland Park sides promotion to the Superleague First Division last season after joining from Premier Division Cumnock and is looking forward to the challenge at Whitletts Victoria as the Dam Park side seek to regain their Superleague status.

Vics’ boss Steph McMillan was delighted to sign the player who he introduced to the junior game when he was manager at Annbank.

“Mick is a player I know very well” said McMillan. “He is a quality striker. He is a very skilful player with loads of pace who knows the way to goal and he’ll be a vital player for us in our promotion bid next season. Although he’s scored goals at a higher level, he’s had recent experience of playing in the Ayrshire District League and did very well for Troon last season, scoring a load of goals for them to help them win promotion. Hopefully he’ll provide the same kind of return for Vics in the season ahead”

O’Connor said that he was delighted to join the Ayr club and is excited about the prospect of playing under McMillan again.
“I’m delighted to sign for Whitletts and hope to do what I can to help the Club regain their place in the Superleague next season” said O’Connor.

“I know the manager very well and that was a key factor for me in agreeing to join the Club. I also know a number of the players and there is a great atmosphere in the squad which I think is always a vital ingredient in any successful team. The manager seems to be building a talented squad for the new campaign and they are a great bunch of lads to be around. “
Meanwhile Whitletts have also re-signed midfielders Craig Rodgers, Bryan Paterson, James Davidson and Cammy Barr for the new campaign but manager McMillan is still looking to strengthen his squad further.

“I’m happy with how things are progressing with the squad just now but will be looking to add to it further in the weeks ahead. There are some players who were here last season and who are just back from holiday as well as a couple of new faces that I’m talking to and hope to have the squad completed in time for the start of the Ardagh Cup campaign in August.”
